Microwave Besan Ladoo

When Srivalli announced the 'Microwave Easy Cooking' Event, I was thrilled, not because I had a hoard of microwave recipes but just because this would give me a chance to try microwave cooking. Till date, I have mostly used my microwave to reheat food, occasionally, to cook potatoes, and then at times to defrost things and soften butter & ice cream. Somehow, the idea of cooking rice in a microwave never really appealed to me and I just love rice made in the pressure cooker, so that was out of question. I did hear a lot of people raving about how the 'Microwave' makes things so easy, but I still had my reservations. I was really looking forward to send in an entry for this month's MEC--Sweets, but I got busy and before I knew, it was the 25th, the last day for the event :( But then, dear Srivalli extended this date and so without wasting any more time, I got busy with my entry--- Microwave Besan Ladoo.

This is my absolutely favorite type of ladoo and I had heard a lot of friends say that these come out excellent in the microwave. So this was the obvious choice for me. I must confess that making Besan ladoo in the microwave was really easy and quick, plus I did not have to keep stirring vigorously, till my arm started paining. Thanks Srivalli for this event!

Ingredients: (makes about 6-7 ladoos)
1 cup Besan (Chickpea flour)
6-7 tbsp Tup (Ghee) (or as required)
3/4 cup Sugar (Powdered or the regular fine variety that is found in the US)
Cardamom powder (2-3 pods)
A handful of raisins
Microwave safe bowl

Method:
Mix the besan and tup (ghee) in a microwave safe bowl. Heat on high for 5 minutes (time may vary slightly for different microwave ovens). Stir after a minute and continue heating. Keep checking and stirring after a minute. At the end of 5 minutes, the mixture will be a nice reddish brown and will have a nice aroma to it.The mixture should not look too dry, otherwise the ladoos will not hold up their shape. Let it cool completely.

Once cooled, add the sugar, cardamom powder and raisins. Mix well and then make small round ladoos out of it. If you realize that the ghee is not sufficient once you start making the ladoos, just heat some ghee and add to the mixture. Enjoy!

hey VB,
thanks for trying the recipe...i am so sorry that they turned out bitter. Maybe the besan got roasted too much and in turn was tasting bitter.

Hey I tried and it came out petty well. I am nota person who can cook anything sweet but this is terrific.. am so proud of myself and more thankful to you for adding this recipe

Pragyan said...

Hi Tee, Finally got to make it. Tastes great. Thanks for sharing.

Admin said...

Just now i finished eating these ladu. Its good in taste and fine, but the main thing i like with this is no oily pan, no utensile washing.....I like cooking but i don't like washing vessels after cooking. When i use to do ladu with old method, even for 10 ladus i need to wash lots many utensiles. You need to change the title from "Microwave Basen Ladoo" to "Hassle Free Besan Ladoo" :)

Check this when you will be free: Know ThySelf. Let me know your feedback also. I know i can't write good as you are. By the way nice description about Bhatukali.

My hubby loves besan laddoo especially aayichya haatche & I could never get them right....I had tried the microwave type too but didnt turn out right....the main mistake was to add sugar to the mixture while heating. Hi i am Shahid from banglore, i was just searching for besan ladoo recipe n i landed here to learn about microwave method looks great. I like besan ladoos very much n my mom makes them occasionaly but doesnt come out so good, she adds sugar flour while still cooking does it make any difference? n one more thing that sugar flour must be very fine or little crispy? Plz reply:-)

KonkaniBlogger said...

Hey Tee, I tried this recipe today and it worked great for me, thanks so much! Have a great Diwali.

Tee said...

Neetu,

this time when i made the ladoos, the sam ething happend with me. I realized that it needed to be roasted just a little more. So i popped it back into the microwave for a few seconds and roasted it again. I would not recoomend roasting for a long time, as there are chnaces of the besan turning bitter, but a few seconds/minutes would not hurt. Make sure there are no raisins in it though, as they will become chewy and bitter. Sorry for the late reply. Hope this helps next time.

Tee said...

Shahid,

I am not sure how the ladoos turn out when the sugar is added while the besan is being roasted. never did that. Traditionally though, we have been adding sugar after the besan has been roasted.

The sugar flour should be a fine powder. That way it will blend into the ladoos well. It does not matter if it is a little granular, but you will keep feeling the crunchiness which is not really the traditional way of how it should be.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Tee!!

I was lucky enough to stumble upon your blog while looking up microwave besan ladoos over the web! I had decided to make besan ladoos in the microwave for this Diwali, but had no clue how to go about it...and you blog helped me just in time! Wow. Thank you so very much :o) They turned out very well...
Being a total newbie at making sweets, I did end up pouring slightly more ghee than was required, but then did some repair-work by adjusting the quantity of ghee in the second set of besan that I microwaved (I split the besan by microwaving 2 cups in the first round and then another 2 cups in the second) -- Made around 27 ladoos with those 4 cups of besan :)

So, once again, a BIG Thank You for inspiring me with this beautiful blog you have.

Warm regards,
Amruta
PS: I saw you have no posts in 2011... Please don't stop adding recipes.. Please please please!!!

1 cup besan and sugar is how much grams? I planning to do this and I don't want it to go out of proportion.

Tee said...

Kani,

From what i found on the internet,
1 cup = about 200 gms of granulated sugar.

I hope this recipe works for you.

Thanks for stopping by.
